I recently promised a good friend that I would help her with a merchandise photo for a contest she wanted to run on her e-commerce site. For a good cause and no budget, I couldn't NOT offer to do it. I thought I could squeeze it onto the end of one of my client days in studio.
No such luck. With deadline looming, I had no choice but to try and shoot it myself in my garage with my tiny Canon G10 with an even tinier cracked display. Did I mention that my garage is currently under construction? So that meant a ready surface in a pile of drywall - just added a coat of paint - plenty of dust to keep me busy dusting the set, a rickety ladder to fasten the tripod to with an A-clamp and viola - RInky Dink Studio. I was shooting blind hoping for the best. There is a tall bluff between me and the west, so I spent the rest of the day chasing the sun between the houses up there, hoping that I'd capture something usable.
I didn't. It was fun trying to figure it out, but unusable - at least to me. Terrible styling, even worse lighting, dust. Never again will I attempt without my friends C1, 5D, proper lighting A PHOTOGRAPHER and a low-dust environment.
